Call for Papers for the 3rd International
Conference on the Ethiopian Economy organized by the Ethiopian Economic
Association, Addis Ababa, June 2005. Deadline for
submissions is March 31, 2005.
The Second International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy which was
held from June 3 to 5, 2004 at the United Nations Conference Center in
Addis Ababa was an unqualified success. It was attended by around 450
participants.
The Conference had three main components: conference lectures, plenary
sessions, and parallel sessions.
Two distinguished African economists delivered conference lectures on:
"The Spread of Economic Doctrines in Post-Colonial Africa" by
Tandika Mkandawire; and "Is Good Policy Good for the Poor?"
by Ali A. G. Ali.
More than 70 papers were presented in the 24 parallel sessions. Five of
these sessions were co-organized by collaborating organizations, namely:
The Ethiopian Bar Association; Forum for Social Studies; Political Science
and International Relations Department, Addis Ababa University; Department
of Sociology, Addis Ababa University; and Ethiopian Society of Soil Science
(ESSS);
More than 15 presentations were delivered during five plenary sessions.
Four of these sessions were co-organized by other organization, namely:
The Ethiopian Water Resources Association (EWRA); Council for the Development
of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA); The World Bank; and The
Ethiopian Bankers’ Association.
The Conference presentations and the discussions thereof covered diverse
themes. These included: Agrarian change; Agricultural Production/Marketing;
Economic Growth/Development - Sectoral Issues; Human Development Issues;
Private Sector Issues; Growth and Public Investment; Economic History;
Environmental Conflict; Federalism and Ethnicity; Finance and Financial
Reform; Fiscal and Monetary Policy; Food Security; Globalization; International
Economic Issues; Law and Development; Millennium Development Goals; Poverty
and well-being; Private Sector Development; Rethinking African Economic
Development; Saving and Investment; The spread of economic Doctrines in
Post-colonial Africa; Urban development; and Water resources Development.

Following this experience and success, the Ethiopian Economic Association
is pleased to announce the 3rd International Conference on the Ethiopian
Economy, which will be held during the first week of June 2005 in Addis
Ababa.
Accordingly, the EEA is seeking papers to be presented at the conference
from all interested individuals. It particularly encourages Ethiopian
economists living in the country or abroad and non-Ethiopian economists
doing research on the Ethiopian economy to present their papers. The papers
could be on any topic related to the performance and/or development of
the Ethiopian economy. You may have noticed that many of the last year’s
conference papers were interdisciplinary. This approach will be encouraged
this year as well.
Prospective participants should send, by email, fax or post and before
March 31, 2005, a notification of interest to the EEA that contains:
• Their complete address (email and institutional affiliation included);
• Their area of interest; and
• A short (no more than one page in length) description of what their
paper is about
The Organizing Committee will select from among the submitted proposals
and will promptly communicate its decision to all concerned.
Authors, whose proposals are selected, are kindly requested to send the
draft paper by email, fax or post by the end of April 2005.
Given the limited resources of the Association, participants are expected
to cover their own transportation cost to and from Addis Ababa. All other
costs during the conference (accommodation, meals and local transport)
will be covered by the Association.
