The
Association of Caribbean Economists, with financial
support from the Ford Foundation, is announcing the
second annual Professional Training Institute for
advanced economic training.
The Workshop
The workshop, which will be held in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic from November 01 to 06, 2004, deals
with the subject of "Trade, Industrial and Innovation
Policy". The aim of the workshop is to enhance
the strategic awareness and negotiations preparedness
skills of young professionals and academicians that
are engaged in the area of trade and industrial policy
development. The Institute attracts a distinguished
faculty of researchers, practitioners, academics,
consultants and activists involved in critical, forward-looking,
work relevant to the development challenges facing
the Greater Caribbean.
The workshop will evaluate the policy options and
strategies in the Greater Caribbean from an historical
and theoretical understanding of the contemporary
development challenge. The main focus will be on the
region's external trade negotiating context (i.e.
the WTO, FTAA, ACP-EU) and will assess the prospects
for industrial upgrading and innovation in traditional
and non-traditional sectors. The workshop will involve
a mix of lectures, simulation exercises, role-playing,
debates and case discussions that allow for critical
and dynamic interchange between and among participants
and faculty.
Applications
Participants will be drawn principally from the Greater
Caribbean region. Participants are required to have
at least masters level training in the field (e.g.
economics, development studies, international relations)
or relevant work experience. Applications are invited
from suitable candidates from private sector organizations,
trade ministries and agencies, regional and non-governmental
organizations, and academia. The workshop is conducted
in English and so a working knowledge of the language
is required. The programme will
cover air travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses.
Applicants should send a CV, one reference letter
from an employer, academic supervisor or sponsoring
agency, along with a covering letter giving full contact
details (including email address) and outlining their
interests in the workshop.
Applications should be mailed, faxed or emailed no
later than August 31, 2004 to
