The Gender Unit (GU) and the Regional office for Southeast and East Asia
(ASRO)
of IDRC seek applications from qualified graduates for a Professional
Development Award beginning in May 2005. The Awardee, based in Singapore,
will assist the Gender Unit Coordinator and the Regional Director in program
development on gender in the region, particularly focusing on questions
of women’s rights, gender justice, citizenship, governance, and gender
mainstreaming. The Awardee will identify areas for research support and
capacity building in the region and explore possible research synergies
in Asia with the Gender Unit’s Women’s Rights and Citizenship programme.
This will involve researching and writing a background issues paper, advising
IDRC on key themes for expanding work in the region, as well as identifying
potential partners in this work.
The position also provides an opportunity for the professional Development
Award holder to undertake his or her own program of research. The Awardee
will undertake a program of research that falls under any of the following
themes: gender equity in governance; decentralization, and state processes;
access to justice; migration, citizenship and livelihood; gender, economic
rights and citizenship; and sexual and reproductive rights.
Other duties will involve assisting with project and partnership development
on gender in the region. The Professional Development Awardee will be
called upon to assist with the overall work of the Gender Unit and of
ASRO, which could include but is not limited to: participation in team
meetings; research tasks to locate, review and synthesize relevant material;
preparation of state of the art reviews; preparation of correspondence;
writing and editing of various documents; liaison with other parts of
the Centre; and assistance with the organization of meetings, workshops
and seminars, arrangements for visitors and the preparation of minutes
and reports. The Awardee will also have access to funds to travel in the
region.
This position is open to citizens (and permanent residents) of Canada
and of countries of Asia. Applicants should have recently completed their
PhD or be enrolled in a PhD program, with course work and fieldwork completed
or completed Masters degree with significant research experience in a
social science discipline. They should have knowledge and experience in
the fields of development, gender and governance/citizenship, and ideally
have conducted work in the Asian region. The position requires fluency
in English. Work experience in Asian countries is preferred.
The duration of the award is one year. Stipend is in the range of $42,620
to $44,751, depending on academic qualifications and experience.
